My Night With Ryan Giggs

This really IS me, on the night I met Ryan Giggs. And you know what? He is even nicer in real life.

Gwynneth Dowd (now Gwynneth Broxton) meets Superstar Footballer

You must be wondering how a simple ordinary woman like me ever came to meet him? Read on… .

The Occasion. This was the night Ryan was the star attraction at the VIP premiere of a new advertisement entitled Doppelganger. The party was held at the Athenaeum bar, Manchester, England, on 4th September 1997. It was by invitation only. Other Manchester United players and tv celebrities (and me) (I was there too!) attended.

Doppelganger was sponsored by Reebok

Doppelganger"Football God or Little Sod?" was a short animated film (you know, like Wallace and Gromit) directed by Nick Donkin. Paul Berry and Mike Johnson, the animators, also made the famous "Nightmare Before Christmas" and "James and the Giant Peach".

In the film, Giggs is an (evil!) Spitting Image-style puppet, cloned using DNA by dastardly "City Chairman" Reginald Backhander.

While the "real" Ryan is tied to a chair, his evil double dons City colours and takes on United in the Cup Final at Wembley.

But Ryan escapes to the twin towers to prove (bear with me here..) to a puppet of United Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel that he is the real thing.

The producer Andrew Ruhemann was given plenty of latitude with the script, and Ryan commented how it was the easiest starring role he had ever had! "The puppet sculptors have done a great job of making them look like the real thing. I cracked up when I saw the Peter Schmeichel character".

Get this! I was only introduced to Bobby Charlton and the man himself, Jimmy Hill !

I was thrilled to meet Ryan - and yes we did get on first name terms. I had been a lapsed supporter until that night, but meeting Ryan and mingling with the players re-kindled my interest!

He had no airs and graces and he gave me his full attention. We had a nice little chat, just like old friends.

Later, we (me and all the other stars!) were invited to some posh party, but I made my excuses and left. College in the morning!

Ryan gets 2,000 fanmail letters per week. On Valentine's Day he receives a staggering 6,000 cards !!

The following section is dedicated to Canadian Manchester United fans, especially the Cheer Up Kevin Keegan readers and Allen Ford.

What do I say? Many's the time I have passed Ryan's old school, Grosvenor Road Primary in Swinton - it is on the main road from Wigan (my home town) to Manchester - and considered his humble beginnings. I never thought that I would ever meet him.

On the night, Ryan really turned on the magic. Have you ever seen someone who looked amazing, but they let themselves down the moment they spoke? Or someone who has the voice of an angel, but who moves like a sloth? Ryan did not disappoint...

Tall, dark and handsome (excuse the cliche) he moved like a panther! He has this amazingly clear, almost translucent skin. He spoke like a confidant, hushed and direct. And yes - he has the look . Need I explain? Those deep brown eyes cut right through into your soul, making you feel special.

And in answer to specific queries (calm down girls!): no dandruff! Nice teeth! Smelt good! (You girls, honestly!) Enough?
